For a long time, I resisted getting a smartphone. I've never been a fan of talking on the phone, so the idea of spending money on a new one didn't appeal to me at all. I was perfectly content with my old school flip phone, secure in the knowledge that I would never become overly dependent on it as folks with smartphones sometimes seem to be. (I've left my phone in the car overnight without even realizing that it's gone.)
I have come to realize that the expectation of having a phone are becoming too obvious to ignore. At Instructurecon last year, there was no printed program, for example. And, although I did not have a smartphone, I was increasingly dependent on those who did while traveling.
When I mentioned my aversion to talking on the phone to someone at a different conference, they planted the seed in my mind with their response: "no one uses a smartphone to make phone calls!"
(Typed on my new smartphone.)
