Attack of the Teacherbots

Recently, I came across an article by futurist Thomas Frey that claimed that AI Teacher-bot Educators would be among in-demand jobs by 2040, along with Robot Sherpas, Asteroid Miners, and Drone Command Crews.

According to Frey, although common jobs in today's workforce are retail salesperson, cashiers, clerks, food service workers and the like, other job categories with become increasingly common as the pace of technological innovation continues to increase. As the current educational system is incapable of producing high caliber workers, instruction need to become more efficient and personalized.

Enter the teacher-bot, an AI-enhanced instructional robot. Developing, training, and supporting teacher-bots will require a team of professionals, including:

  • Teacher-bot interface designers
  • Teacher-bot courseware creators
  • Teacher-bot engineers
  • Teacher-bot maintenance and repair
  • Learning coaches
  • Learning optimizers
I'm always a little wary of grand pronouncements (Truth be told, I was actually trying to find educational predictions from the past to compare them with today's reality -- wasn't the iPad suppose to revolutionize education?), but it is interesting to take a step back and think about what opportunities and challenges the future might bring.

I don't believe that robots will replace teachers any time soon, but, that said, I'm pretty sure that folks developing supercomputers in the 1950s - 1990s didn't see smartphones coming either (https://www.theclever.com/15-huge-supercomputers-that-were-less-powerful-than-your-smartphone/).
