The Most Important Election Ever (Until the Next One)

I certainly don't want to downplay the importance of today's election, but that we find ourselves in such a polarized time is both an indictment of our increasingly hysterical 24-hour news media and of ourselves.  In place of factual reporting and insightful commentary, we have self-aggrandizing pundits hoping to go viral. We are content to think in terms of bumper stickers and hashtags, completely oblivious to the complexity of the issues to which they refer. We catastrophize every event, and any disagreement about a course of action is treated as a declaration of war.

Irrespective of what happens today, we need to work our way back to a place where we worry less about which political "team" we are rooting for, and more about how to reinvigorate civil discourse. There are looming issues that will require the best efforts of sober minds to navigate. Our challenges as a nation and as a global community are going to get tougher in the coming years, and we'd better be up to the task.

If you haven't already, and you are eligible, be sure to vote!
